With the summer heat upon us it’s not too late to start thinking about ways to keep your energy bills low. When I inspect homes, I look for a lot of the same things that will help with its efficiency as well as things that are not up to code.
Here is a list of some ideas that you can do to help cut down on your energy cost while keeping your home a little cooler!
• Make sure the weather stripping is sealing your exterior doors correctly. If you can see sunlight around the edges of the door when it’s closed chances are you may need new or additional weather stripping.
• Make sure your windows are sealed to the exterior brick/siding with caulking that isn’t cracked or incomplete. Our Texas sun deteriorates caulking over time causing it to allow your cool air to escape outside!
• Create some shade around your home by planting trees or shrubs. It is best to plant them near windows and on the sunnier side of your home. Just be sure to plant them at least two feet away from your home’s wall. You can also save money by planting them around your air conditioning units. A shaded unit can improve its efficiency by as much as 10% compared to a unit in direct sun. Just be sure not to plant too close to where they can block the unit’s airflow.
Making your home energy efficient is not just a great way to save on your electric bills and it will also help prolong the life of many of your home’s appliances by not making them run under any un-needed stress.
